Vineyard Assistant Manager/Winery Senior Operator

Hillersden Winery Ltd is a winery and vineyard based in Blenheim, New Zealand. We are looking for a Vineyard Assistant Manager/Winery Senior Operator who will report to the Winemaker and Vineyard Manager in order to deliver effective and efficient business operations, from viticulture to winemaking, including managing the Vineyard during the Vineyard Manager’s absence.

Key role responsibilities to include:

  • Fulfill Vineyard Manager duties in respect of our Vineyard Operators when our Vineyard Manager is off site, including managing various shifts over the growing season and during any periods of absence of the Vineyard Manager

  • Supervise and manage our seasonal workforce (approximately 50 workers) for pruning, bud rubbing, wire lifting, skirting, fruit thinning, second set fruit removal and harvesting

  • Other management duties as required including some computer work and planning (including staff timesheets and job scheduling)

  • Operate all vineyard machinery safely and to the quality standards and timeframe required. You will be required to be able to setup and monitor each of the machines and attachments to ensure that they can operate to maximum efficiency

  • Assist with all general vineyard tasks such as irrigation, trellis maintenance, canopy management, chainsaw work, post replacement and general vineyard tasks, as required

  • General maintenance (including pre-departure and regular checks) on all machinery

  • As a senior operator, take a lead role in following H&S guidelines including: reporting hazards, reporting of incidents and near misses, safe chemical handling, and following SOP’s

  • Assist with developing processes to ensure consistent use of forms, procedures and policies across all vineyards

  • Perform all duties of a Senior Winery Cellar Hand and demonstrate experience and thorough knowledge of winery systems

  • Winemaker support as required.

We are interested in hearing from candidates with the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • At least three years’ experience in viticultural work, including experience in managing a Vineyard team and in Vineyard machinery operations, including operating Gregoire harvesting machinery and other tractors and machinery

  • At least two vintages’ Cellarhand experience with sound knowledge of all winery operations and equipment

  • Current driver’s license

  • A forklift license and Growsafe certificate an advantage
