| Details: | THE FRESHEST ISLAYS Monday 22 or Wednesday 24 February, 6.00 pm start, Cost $50.00, Limit 30 places each night The western region of Islay has been abuzz for the last decade. Following the closure of Bruichladdich in 1994, a group of investors led by Mark Reynier restored and renovated the distillery for reopening in 2000, with distillation recommencing in 2001. Since then, the subtle and delicate single malt whisky has regained and in fact grown in stature. Just two miles down the road was the old Lochindaal distillery, closed in 1929 after a century of operation. Mark Reynier and his investor group have brought it back to life as the new Port Charlotte distillery. The PC whiskies, initially made at Bruichladdich, but now at the revitalised premises, have proven to be stars at our tastings at Regional Wines & Spirits. The far more heavily peated style has found great favour here and around the world. The latest development in the region has been the opening in 2005 of the Kilchoman Farm Distillery, one of the few new distilleries in over a century! It is Scotland’s smallest distillery and sees the whole process of ‘barley to bottling’ wholly on site. The new Kilchoman spirit has been featured at tastings through 2009. The first whisky tasting of 2010 will feature a selection of ‘fresh’ and ‘new off the block’ Islays, which by no means will be light, simple and uncomplicated, but rather true, characterful Islay renditions. Our malt maestro Daniel Bruce McLaren-Moon will take us through the Kilchoman 2 month new spirit, the 2 y.o. new spirit and the 3 y.o. 46% single malt (at last!). From Port Charlotte, there will be the now impossible to get ‘PC6’ 61.6%, the mind-blowing ‘PC7’ 61.0% and hot off the press ‘PC8’ 60.5%. As is the norm, there will be an intriguing ‘mystery malt’ to keep us honest! We expect this to book quickly. |
