MARTINBOROUGH VINEYARD – RIESLING & PINOT NOIR FOCUS

Thursday 11 February, 6.00 pm start, Cost $50.00, Limit 30 places

Marking 30 years since the first vines were planted at Martinborough Vineyard, this tasting celebrates the varietals that have fulfilled the potential that could only be imagined at that time. Although Martinborough Vineyard has an excellent track record with all of the varieties it handles, it is Riesling and Pinot Noir that continue to be the most exciting. Martinborough Vineyard’s winemaker Paul Mason will present a tasting which focuses on these wines. We will look at three styles of Riesling, all from the 2009 vintage that demonstrate versatility – the dry ‘Jackson Block’ at 4 g/l residual sugar, the medium ‘Manu’ at 25 g/l, and new ‘Bruno’, a Germanic spatlese style at 9.5% alc. and 55 g/l rs. This is the first release of the ‘Bruno’, and only 40 cases were made. The wine will not be made available to retail, but attendees at the tasting will be supplied if they order. The Pinot Noir focus will be fascinating, exploring winemaker signature as well as site and terroir. Starting with the second label ‘Te Tera’ 2008, we will then taste the 2007 and 2008 Burnt Spur Pinots from the clay-influenced soils to the south-west of the village, then a flight of Martinborough Vineyard Pinots, the 2008, 2007 and an older vintage. We finish with the two releases of the super-premium ‘Mazie Zelie’ Pinot Noir, the 2003 and newly released 2006, which are arguably the finest (and definitely the most expensive – at over $179.00 per bottle) Pinot Noirs made in New Zealand.
