Company: Villa Maria
Location: Hawkes Bay
Category: Winemaking / Lab / Production
In 2017 Villa Maria was named as one of the 10 most admired wine brands in the world (for the third consecutive year) by Drinks International, the only New Zealand brand in the top 10.
Villa Maria Family of Wineries, which includes Villa Maria, Vidal Estate, Esk Valley, Thornbury, Te Awa, Left Field and Kidnapper Cliffs are building a new winery located by the Gimblett Gravels. The winery will focus on production of premium wines from white and red grapes harvested in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay.
The winery will be a state-of-the-art facility and will include open-top concrete tanks, individual barrel rooms and fruit sorting equipment specially designed for super-premium handpicked grapes. The winery will create efficiencies without compromising the historical individuality that characterizes the wines that will be crafted there.
Reporting directly to the Cellar Manager, these require individuals who have demonstrated a history of managing teams on the cellar floor.
The principle role of the Supervisors is to organise teams and workflows to confidently produce quality wine using processes prescribed by winemakers. There is a need to ensure the integrity and authenticity of different brands and styles of wines unique to individual winemakers.
A strong health & safety focus will underlay a primary quality ethic and the ability to promote a very competent team of Cellar Hands capable of directing vintage staff. These are fundamental attributes for the applicants.
Applicants are expected to have had at least 5 years’ experience and be at a minimum of level “A” Cellar Hand ability. An intimate knowledge of all aspects of wine processing will be required. Team building, staff management, good record keeping and a very high level of organisational skills are a necessity for this role, as will be a passion for wine and an enthusiasm for embracing new technology and work practices.
The new winery will be operational for the 2018 vintage and the successful applicants will be expected to assist the Cellar Manager in the commissioning of new equipment, recruitment and training of staff, implementation of SOP’s, and assisting with the smooth transition from existing to new operational practices, including changing shift patterns throughout the year.
The role requires a high degree of flexibility, an expectation of varied work hours, and will suit persons comfortable with change.
